Investment comes to the Yukon

Yukon Venture Angels Launch their network at Yukon Innovation Week

WHITEHORSE, Nov. 5, 2021— Local leaders have come together to launch Yukon Venture Angels (YVA), a ground-breaking angel investment group. The launch event will showcase the possibilities for growing global-facing enterprises in the Yukon and celebrate the notable new partnership with the National Angel Capital Organization (NACO).

YVA’s mission is to create a sustainable and diversified Yukon economy. By sharing ideas, lessons, opportunities, and enthusiasm, YVA aspires to encourage the private sector to champion local start-up businesses and bridge the gap between grant funding and later stage investments.

The need for a group like YVA was clearly pointed out in the 2020 NACO report commissioned by YG, in which it was noted that:

“The Yukon Angel investment market is currently fragmented and not well-organized. There is a need for early-stage capital. Early-stage opportunities in Yukon often go unfunded, remain under-capitalized, and never reach their full potential.”– (Mobilizing Angel Activity in Yukon, National Angel Capital Organization, Nov. 2020, p.16)

YVA believes there is considerable room for improvement and wants to be a positive and constructive influence in helping to build a genuinely diverse, robust and resilient Yukon economy by leveraging the power of private investment and mentorship.

“Historically, the Yukon was thought of as an isolated place– but remoteness is no longer defined by geography,” said YVA President, Barrett Horne. “Today, it’s defined by connectivity; the Yukon’s market is now the World. Our local companies should have access to capital that will allow them to become global-facing ventures, and that starts with a strong network of educated, impact-minded Angel investors at home.”

YVA does not invest– they are a community of investors. Whether an experienced investor or a first-time angel, YVA welcomes all that are interested in making an impact to attend their community’s launch events during Yukon Innovation Week 2021

The Launch event will include networking, company introductions, and more information on what Angel investment is and why it matters. Drinks and catering will be included.

YVA believes there is considerable room for improvement and wants to be a positive and constructive influence in helping to build a genuinely diverse, robust and resilient Yukon economy by leveraging the power of private investment and mentorship.

“Resiliency in our future means a diversified territorial economy. If we are to be resilient in the face of whatever happens next, then we need strong, private-sector businesses, with startups hiring and rooted here. How do we fertilize the field? We create the conditions for success to foster and grow.”
